Backstage everybody has their rituals. It’s what you do before the show and what’s going on between. Sometimes you’re nearly missing a cue because you were stretching out on a bar and acting like a monkey or dancing to other people’s songs. One time, I was watching Naya, because you never really see the whole show because you’re in it. I remember being like, “I really want to watch Valerie (Rivera’s cover of the Amy Winehouse track) right now.” I had a little bit more time, but I hadn’t put my sweater back on because it was really hot and I was watching. I was like, “It looks great! Beautiful! Look at these dancers,” not realizing that the song was almost over and I had to get my mic, put my sweater back on and run up in the first couple seconds of the last song. I almost didn’t make it. I was just trying to support my friends.
